ClassNK Approves Design for 42,000 m3 Low-Pressure Liquefied CO2 Carrier for Japanese CCS Projects
imarinenews.comJapanese shipping lines and shipyards have received approval in principle from ClassNK for a standardized low-pressure liquefied CO2 carrier. The 42,000 m3 design is intended to move captured CO2 from Japanese industrial sites to storage locations as domestic CCS projects scale up. Six companies, including NYK Line, K Line, MOL, Nihon Shipyard, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, and MILES, worked on the design and completed a hazard identification study focused on LCO2 handling. The vessel is the first concrete output of the MILES framework set up in late 2025 to standardize LCO2 carrier design and construction. A common design platform is expected to reduce engineering workload and make domestic shipbuilding more efficient. The approval is a step toward building a CCS value chain in Japan, though actual deployment will depend on storage site development and project economics.
