The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) has signed an MoU with the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) and technology firm Merago Inc. to develop carbon credit projects based on regenerative cotton farming. The initiative will promote practices like biochar and compost application to improve soil health and sequester carbon, while giving farmers a new income stream from verified carbon credits. ICAC will provide technical expertise, Merago will handle the digital platform and carbon asset management, and CITI's research arm will manage farmer engagement and project execution. Carbon credits generated under the project will be developed in line with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and India's national carbon market rules. Verified emission reductions will be recorded in the national registry before any transfer or sale. The goal is to lower the carbon footprint of India's cotton sector and strengthen its global competitiveness, while supporting the country's target of a $350 billion textile and apparel industry by 2030.
