The CIRCARB project is a four year, £6 million initiative led by Aston University and Loughborough University to eliminate fossil-derived carbon from industrial materials. The programme focuses on creating sustainable alternatives for the chemicals, plastics, and construction sectors through biogenic carbon pathways. Key goals include developing Digital Carbon Passports to track embedded carbon and creating carbon-negative construction aggregates from farm waste. The project also explores using microbes to turn food waste and cooking oil into biodegradable bioplastics to reduce the industrial carbon footprint.
