Heidelberg Materials subsidiary Cimtogo has launched Ecocim, a lower-carbon cement for the Togolese market. The product replaces the Super Rapide line and reduces clinker content while keeping the same mechanical strength. Cimtogo says CO2 emissions drop from 485.6 kg to 468.6 kg per tonne of cement, a reduction of about 17 kg per tonne. Ecocim is also the first cement made in Togo to meet the country's new TGN 002 standard. The 17 kg per tonne cut is modest but meaningful for a hard to abate sector like cement. The move aligns with Heidelberg Materials' broader decarbonization strategy. For Togo, having a locally produced lower-carbon cement that meets a new national standard could help reduce imported cement and support cleaner construction. The real test will be whether builders adopt it at scale and if the price premium, if any, is acceptable.
