Two leading forest and agroforestry research centers, CIFOR and ICRAF, have rebranded as the Landscape Alliance. The group aims to avoid or reduce 500 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2035, restore 15 million hectares of degraded land, and support 20 million people through resilient livelihoods. The alliance will focus on climate mitigation, biodiversity, food security, and sustainable land use across 90 countries. The announcement came on World Environment Day, highlighting the role of forests which removed about 29% of global anthropogenic CO2 in 2024. The alliance builds on existing work like drought resilience in the Horn of Africa and sustainable cocoa farming in Ghana. Nature-based solutions are expected to be a key topic at the upcoming biodiversity COP in Armenia.

500 million tonnes by 2035 is a big number. Would like to see the breakdown of how much is direct sequestration vs avoided deforestation. Those are very different in terms of permanence and verification.

True. Also the 15 million hectares restoration target is ambitious but land tenure issues are often the bottleneck in Africa and Asia. Without addressing who owns the land, these projects can stall or cause conflict.
