Decarbonizing old church buildings is a nightmare. Between the heritage protections and the lack of insulation, the cost per ton of carbon saved is usually huge. I wonder if they are focusing on heat pumps or just basic fabric upgrades.
The real question is how they measure the impact. If they are using broad sustainability metrics for the real estate portfolio, it might hide a lack of actual emissions reductions in the harder to treat historic assets.
8% is a clean number. I am more interested in the actual capital allocated to the Net Zero Carbon programme. Is it enough to actually move the needle on grid demand for these sites, or is it just a small percentage of the total spend?
Interesting to see a massive endowment fund explicitly linking its returns to a Net Zero programme. Most just talk about ESG. This actually puts money toward building retrofits.
