During peak sunlight, plants often slow photosynthesis, a phenomenon known as the 'lunch break' that can cut yields by roughly 30%. The protein forms condensates around chloroplasts, acting like a sunscreen to prevent damage before it starts. Field trials across Hainan, Beijing, and Heilongjiang over four years showed that increasing MBS1 expression in rice led to stable or higher yields without harming normal growth. The team says the mechanism could apply to wheat and other crops, with potential to significantly boost carbon dioxide fixation and support China's climate goals.
