Chinese scientists develop one-step catalytic process to turn farm waste into high-value biochar for carbon storage and green fuel
chinadaily.com.cnResearchers at the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center have developed a one-step catalytic dry process that converts agricultural and forestry biomass into high-value biochar at scale. A single high-pressure carbonization unit can produce over 50,000 tons of biochar per year, addressing traditional bottlenecks like low yield, poor quality, and high energy consumption. The technology has already been deployed in multiple cities in China. Biochar produced through this method can be used for soil improvement, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and environmental adsorption. The team is also working on a project in Bozhou, Anhui, to produce green aviation fuel from biochar. This development could help replace fossil fuels and support China's carbon neutrality goals by turning farm waste into a durable carbon sink.
