The new approach, published in Science, reduces energy consumption per unit mass by 90% and avoids hazardous reagents, supporting greener manufacturing. The technology produces a three-atomic-layer platinum shell that optimizes catalytic activity. In hydrogen fuel cells, catalysts made with this method achieved 15.2 kilowatts per gram of platinum with excellent durability. The team says the method could also apply to high-end chemical manufacturing and environmental catalysis. This advance directly supports China's carbon reduction goals and energy security strategy by improving fuel cell performance and reducing reliance on precious metals. It represents a practical step toward lower-cost, more efficient green hydrogen technologies.
