Two Chinese inventors, Xie Yinghao and Yu Haijun, won the 2026 European Inventor Award in the Non-EPO Countries category for a smart battery recycling process. Their directed recycling method recovers 99.6 percent of nickel, cobalt, and manganese and 96.5 percent of lithium from spent lithium-ion batteries. It also cuts acid and alkali use by 73 percent and produces cathode materials with a 61 percent lower carbon footprint than conventional production. The technology directly regenerates spent battery materials into high-performance NCM cathodes, preserving the crystal structure. With over 2,000 GWh of lithium-ion battery capacity added globally between 2018 and 2023, this process addresses the growing need to recover critical raw materials and reduce waste. The inventors plan to deepen China-Europe cooperation on battery circularity.
