China uses precision tools and composite planting to restore mangrove wetlands and boost carbon sequestration

The approach uses mixed tree and shrub species to create a layered coastal barrier that resists waves better than single-species planting. Researchers in Fujian province have applied the technique to restore over 13 hectares of degraded shoreline. The method also improves carbon storage. By combining tall trees with understory shrubs, the system captures more carbon through photosynthesis and reduces loss of organic matter to tides. The team developed a root removal technique to avoid double counting living roots as soil carbon, which sharpens the accuracy of carbon stock estimates. The restoration technique is now listed among 35 proven innovations in China's national ecological catalog. It supports a carbon monitoring framework that feeds into the country's voluntary emissions reduction program, linking field restoration directly to carbon credit methodology.
