The method, developed by the Third Institute of Oceanography, starts with a full site assessment of soil, salinity, and tidal data before any planting begins. This 'coastal armor' technique aims to improve survival rates and create more resilient marine ecosystems. The composite planting structure is designed to enhance carbon sequestration. Taller trees break wave force while understory shrubs add more photosynthetic capacity and trap organic matter for soil carbon accumulation. Researchers also developed a method to remove living roots from soil samples to avoid double counting, improving the accuracy of carbon stock estimates. The technique is one of 35 innovations selected for China's latest ecological catalog under the 15th Five-Year Plan. It also supports the national project methodology for mangrove afforestation under China's voluntary greenhouse gas emissions reduction program, directly linking the restoration work to carbon market frameworks.
