A group of 35 Chinese and American university students visited the 110kV Lieqiao Substation in Guangzhou, a facility designed by China Southern Power Grid to combine power transformation with public education. The substation uses prefabricated assembly and rooftop photovoltaic generation to cut annual carbon emissions by about 140 tons and improve building energy efficiency by 26% compared to standard substations. The visit was part of the 2026 China-US Youth Future Climate Leadership Exchange Program in the Greater Bay Area. Students from the University of California, Riverside noted the substation's central urban location and public-friendly design as a model for integrating green infrastructure into cities. Participants said the hands-on experience showed how existing technology can be applied to meet carbon goals.
