China turns to coal for sodium-ion battery anodes as coconut shell supply runs short

The move addresses a supply bottleneck: coconut shell biomass yields only 2.5% battery-grade carbon, while coal processing hits 45% yield. Hard carbon anode costs have already dropped below 30,000 yuan per ton, with a target under 20,000 yuan. This pivot secures a local supply chain for sodium-ion cells used in budget EVs and grid storage. Polyanion cathode chemistries now dominate 77% of shipments. The question is whether coal-derived anodes can scale cleanly enough to keep lifecycle emissions low while meeting 100 GWh demand by 2027.
