China to accelerate green transition and carbon market expansion in 15th Five-Year Plan period
news.cgtn.comChina's environment ministry says the country will step up its green transition during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), including promoting peak coal and oil consumption and meeting its 2030 Nationally Determined Contributions. Renewables reached 2.455 billion kilowatts of installed capacity in the first half of 2026, about 60.7% of total power capacity. Solar capacity overtook coal by the end of July, according to vice minister Li Gao. The national carbon market has now traded over 1 billion tonnes cumulatively and covers roughly 8.3 billion tonnes of CO2, more than 65% of China's total emissions. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the market cut thermal power emissions by about 530 million tonnes and delivered around 36 billion yuan in emission reduction benefits to more than 1,100 entities. China has also issued 113 national carbon management standards, with more than 50 expected this year, covering accounting, trading, and product carbon footprints. For companies tracking climate policy and carbon markets, the key details are the planned expansion of carbon coverage, new standards for carbon accounting, and the push to peak coal and oil consumption. These are the signals that will shape project financing and compliance decisions in China over the next five years.
