China Tests Converting Coal Plant CO2 and Sulfur into Fertilizer

Jiangnan Environmental Technology is piloting a system at the Jiufeng Thermal Power Plant to capture carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide from coal smokestacks. Instead of underground storage, the process uses ammonia to turn these pollutants into ammonium sulfate and ammonium bicarbonate fertilizers. The company claims this approach turns carbon capture from a cost center into a profit center, potentially generating over 14 dollars per ton of CO2 captured. A larger scale project in Xinjiang aims to capture one million tons of CO2 annually to test commercial viability.
