China has set a target to generate 50% of its electricity from non-fossil sources by 2030, up from 42.3% in 2025. Solar and wind are expected to account for 30% of total power generation, compared to 22% last year. Despite the shift, electricity demand is growing 5% annually, so power sector emissions are still expected to rise during this period. The government also plans to reach 300 GW of non-pumped hydro energy storage by 2030 and produce 2 million metric tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year. Analysts note that current investment levels have not jumped significantly in response to this target, and that cutting power sector emissions back to 2025 levels would require reductions of 17-23%.
