China's Ministry of Transport has set a national target to have 1.6 million new energy heavy trucks on the road by 2030, with 40 percent of new heavy truck sales being electric or hydrogen-powered. Heavy trucks make up only 3 percent of China's vehicle fleet but produce half of all road transport carbon emissions, making this shift critical for meeting peak carbon goals. The plan includes building 3,000 dedicated charging and battery swap stations along a 30,000-kilometer zero-carbon highway network. Electric heavy trucks cut annual operating costs by up to 250,000 yuan per vehicle compared to diesel, and the purchase price gap is narrowing. Analysts project that by 2035, new energy heavy trucks could account for 80 to 90 percent of new sales, driven by battery advances and green hydrogen production.
