China Southern Power Grid has completed testing of a mobile computing shelter in Guiyang, Guizhou. The 40 foot container houses high density computing with liquid cooling and a dispatch system that communicates with the grid in real time. The shelter is designed to address the growing electricity demand from data centers, which reached 196 billion kWh in 2025 and could hit 500 to 700 billion kWh by 2030. The shelter connects to the grid's electricity carbon calculation platform. This allows the grid to dispatch computing loads based on real time electricity prices and renewable generation. When wind and solar output is high, the shelter runs more. When power is scarce, it scales back. The system also tracks carbon emissions per kilowatt hour, enabling low carbon computing to be certified and traded in the carbon market. This shifts data centers from being passive users to flexible grid assets. The test signals a broader shift in China's computing industry. State owned grid companies are moving beyond selling electricity to offering computing power optimized for energy cost and carbon footprint. The approach could reshape competition in the data center sector, where electricity bills already account for a large share of operating costs and carbon markets are expanding rapidly.
