Researchers at Shenzhen University are developing a direct coal fuel cell that generates electricity without combustion. By using an electrochemical process instead of steam turbines, the system aims for efficiency levels between 75% and 80% while producing a concentrated stream of carbon dioxide for easier capture.

The efficiency claims are high, but the real question is the degradation rate of these cells. High temperature electrochemical reactions usually eat through materials quickly. I want to see the operational lifespan of a pilot unit before calling this a game changer.
Even if the tech works, the policy hurdle is the carbon capture part. Turning CO2 into sodium bicarbonate is one thing, but the scale of industrial waste needed for mineralization is massive. The incentive structure for the byproduct needs to be clear for this to be viable.
Interesting approach to avoid the boiler and turbine waste. If South Africa actually implements this, it could slow the transition to renewables, but it beats the current aging fleet that just leaks emissions everywhere.
The idea of underground generation is the most radical part here. Moving the power to the surface via cables instead of hauling coal via rail saves a lot of logistics costs, but the maintenance of robotic systems in a deep mine is a nightmare.
