Researchers at Shenzhen University have developed a direct coal fuel cell called the ZC-DCFC. Unlike traditional power plants, this system generates electricity through a chemical reaction in a sealed cell rather than burning coal in a boiler. This process produces a concentrated stream of carbon dioxide, making it easier to capture and store underground. While the technology shows promise for reducing emissions, significant hurdles remain. The system requires coal to be ground into a fine powder and operates at extreme temperatures between 1,100 and 1,650 degrees Fahrenheit. These requirements, along with the need for advanced materials to resist corrosion, will determine if the technology can scale beyond the lab.
