China's steel transition draws billions but value chain gaps remain: Climate Bonds report
climatebonds.netA new report from Climate Bonds Initiative shows China's steel decarbonization is pulling in real money. Hebei province alone approved CNY 46.9 billion (USD 6.9 billion) in transition lending by end of 2025. Seven out of 12 green, social, sustainability, and sustainability-linked (GSS+) steel bonds issued in China last year targeted scrap processing and electric arc furnace construction, totaling CNY 7 billion. But the report flags a problem: financing is still concentrated on steel production. The wider value chain, including raw materials and demand for low-carbon steel, needs more attention. A high green premium and the lack of unified standards for green steel procurement are holding back broader adoption. Expanded Chinese taxonomies could open new channels for finance across the steel value chain. The report suggests that without stronger demand signals and standards, the next stage of decarbonization will stall. Worth a read for anyone tracking industrial transition finance in Asia.
