Chinese researchers at the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center have developed a new biochar technology that can produce over 50,000 tons of biochar annually from a single high-pressure carbonization unit. The one-step catalytic dry process converts agricultural and forestry biomass into high-value biochar, addressing traditional bottlenecks like low yield and high energy consumption. The technology has already been deployed in multiple cities and is being used to develop green aviation fuel in Bozhou, Anhui Province. Biochar has multiple applications including soil improvement for better crop yields, energy storage, environmental adsorption, and catalysis. The project leader noted that the goal is to upgrade biomass resources into high-value applications that can replace fossil fuels and support China's carbon peaking and carbon neutrality targets. This represents a practical step toward turning agricultural waste into a resource that can help decarbonize multiple sectors.
