China's MIIT Recognizes DODGEN Melt Crystallization for 72% Energy Cut in Battery Solvent Purification

The project replaced conventional distillation for purifying ethylene carbonate, a key solvent in lithium-ion battery electrolytes, cutting unit energy consumption by 72% from 120.9 to 33.3 kg of standard coal per tonne. It saves 7,884 tonnes of standard coal and avoids about 21,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually across a 90,000-tonne-per-year production line. The retrofit was completed in five months and uses multi-stage temperature control to within 0.5 degrees Celsius. DODGEN says the approach improves purification efficiency by roughly 40% compared to distillation, which is energy-intensive and risks thermal degradation for heat-sensitive materials. The technology supports China's push to localize high-purity electrolyte materials for its growing battery supply chain. For carbon markets and industrial decarbonization, this is a concrete example of process intensification delivering verified energy and emissions savings at scale. The MIIT recognition adds credibility to the claimed 72% reduction, though independent verification of the 21,000-tonne CO2 avoidance figure would strengthen the case for carbon credit methodologies tied to industrial retrofits.
