China's Longxing ships sustainable carbon black from waste tire oil to European tire maker | carboncredit.io
european-rubber-journal.comChinese chemical firm Longxing Technology Group has started volume shipments of sustainable carbon black to a major European tire manufacturer. The material is made from waste tire pyrolysis oil, replacing coal tar feedstock in traditional carbon black production. Initial orders total nearly 10 kilotonnes, and the company says the process offers improved economics and lower emissions than conventional methods. Longxing began research into this route in 2024 and completed its SC-series products in 2025. Unlike recovered carbon black from direct tire pyrolysis, this process uses pyrolysis oil as a drop-in replacement for fossil-based feedstock. The company is now accelerating sampling and certification with other European tire makers and plans phased capacity expansion based on demand. The shift matters for industrial decarbonization because carbon black production is energy-intensive and relies on coal tar, a high-emission feedstock. If this technology scales, it could cut lifecycle emissions in tire manufacturing while creating a market for end-of-life tire waste. The key unknowns are cost competitiveness at scale and how fast certification cycles move for new materials in tire supply chains.
