China's Gansu-Shandong UHV line moves 28.8 billion kWh of low-carbon energy in first year

Over 40% of that power came from wind and solar farms, saving 3.54 million metric tons of standard coal. The 800 kV line connects renewable-rich Gansu province to eastern industrial hubs including Beijing, Shanghai, and Shandong. The line is the first UHV DC project commissioned during China's 14th Five-Year Plan period. It integrates wind, solar, thermal, and storage resources in a coordinated dispatch model. In November 2025, it delivered 290 million kWh of 100% renewable electricity to Shanghai for the China International Import Expo. Gansu's installed new energy capacity now exceeds 80% of its total, and the province's new energy industry output value has surpassed 100 billion yuan. The project supports China's West-to-East Power Transmission strategy and its dual carbon goals. It reduces transportation costs for renewable equipment manufacturers in Gansu and helps eastern ports like Weifang and Dongying move toward zero-carbon operations.
