China's Gansu-Shandong UHV line moves 28.8 billion kWh of low-carbon energy in first year

China's Gansu-to-Shandong ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission line has delivered 28.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in its first full year of operation. The 800 kV line carries power from wind and solar farms in Gansu province to eastern economic hubs including Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin. Over 40 percent of the energy came from renewable sources, saving 3.54 million metric tons of standard coal. The line is the first UHV DC project commissioned under China's 14th Five-Year Plan and the first to achieve full capacity in a single commissioning. It integrates wind, solar, thermal, and storage resources. During the November 2025 China International Import Expo, it routed 290 million kWh of green electricity to Shanghai over 10 days. The project supports China's dual carbon goals and helps Gansu's new energy industry, which now exceeds 80 percent of the province's total installed capacity.
