China's express delivery industry cuts packaging waste and carbon emissions one year after revised regulation

China's express delivery industry has reduced packaging waste and carbon emissions one year after a revised regulation took effect in June 2025. The State Post Bureau reports that standardized packaging now accounts for 86% of total packaging, and reusable packaging is used in over 10% of same-city deliveries. Nearly 1.62 billion cardboard boxes were recycled, cutting carbon emissions by 209,400 metric tons. The industry has deployed more than 75,000 new-energy and clean-energy vehicles, and postal and express enterprises generated 355 million kilowatt-hours of solar power, reducing emissions by about 193,000 tons. Consumers are seeing thinner cartons, narrower tape, smaller waybills, and more reusable packaging. The bureau plans to continue promoting certified green packaging, reusable packaging, and smart packaging technologies to support the low-carbon transition.
