China's coal fuel cell generates electricity with near-zero carbon emissions, turning CO2 into useful chemicals

The system uses an electrochemical process where treated coal reacts in an anode chamber with oxygen to generate power directly, avoiding combustion and steam turbines. The captured high-purity CO2 can be converted into synthesis gas or sodium bicarbonate, creating valuable byproducts instead of releasing emissions into the atmosphere. The technology, led by Xie Heping from Shenzhen University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is still experimental but offers a potential pathway for regions heavily dependent on coal to reduce their carbon footprint. By reimagining coal use through electrochemistry rather than burning, the zero-carbon-emission direct coal fuel cell could provide a cleaner alternative for existing fossil fuel infrastructure while producing useful materials from waste CO2.
