China's carbon market tops 1 billion metric tons traded, adds petrochemicals and chemicals by 2027
chinadailyasia.comChina's national carbon emissions trading market has passed 1 billion metric tons in trading volume, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. The market currently covers about 8.3 billion tons of CO2, more than 65 percent of the country's total emissions. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the thermal power sector reduced around 530 million tons of CO2, and more than 1,100 companies received about 36 billion yuan ($5.39 billion) in emissions-reduction returns. By 2027, China plans to bring petrochemicals and chemicals into the market, expanding it beyond power generation. The country also reports that carbon intensity per unit of GDP is 17.7 percent below 2020 levels, with wind and solar installed capacity at 1.84 billion kilowatts. The next question is whether allowance caps stay tight enough to keep driving real reductions as coverage widens.
