Chinese researchers at Northwest Normal University and Gansu Zhulong Technology have developed a compact nuclear battery using carbon-14 and silicon carbide. The device converts beta radiation directly into electricity, similar to a solar panel but using electron decay instead of light. It produces 1.13 microwatts at 2.06 volts from a 16.8 cubic centimeter volume. While not powerful enough for consumer electronics, the battery is designed for long life applications like spacecraft, medical implants, and remote sensors where maintenance is not possible. The carbon-14 half life of 5730 years means the battery could power devices for centuries. The technology is built entirely on Chinese supply chains, which matters for energy independence in strategic applications. For the carbon and climate community, the relevance is indirect but real: any low power sensor network that can run for decades without battery swaps reduces waste and enables better environmental monitoring. The real question is whether this can scale beyond niche uses and at what cost per microwatt.
