A new study in the journal Carbon Neutrality maps carbon budgets for China's residential building sector at the provincial level. It uses the Kaya identity and Monte Carlo simulation to project emission peaks for urban and rural homes under business-as-usual and decarbonization scenarios. The results show rural residential emissions peaking around 2026, while urban emissions peak closer to 2031 under current trends, with significant variation across China's 30 provinces. The study highlights that provinces like Henan, Xinjiang, and Gansu face the largest emission reduction requirements, and it calls for differentiated policy approaches rather than a one-size-fits-all national budget. It also recommends targeted retrofits, electrification, heat pumps, and stronger efficiency standards as practical levers. For anyone tracking subnational climate policy or building sector decarbonization, this is a useful reference for how provincial targets could align with China's 2060 net-zero goal.
