A Chinese shipbuilder, Jiangnan Shipyard, has unveiled a concept for a massive floating island powered by molten salt reactors. The island would function as a container terminal and charging station for ships, aiming to create a zero-emission logistics hub for global shipping. This could significantly cut carbon emissions from the maritime sector. The design uses advanced molten salt reactors that store thermal energy and cool without water. The concept was presented at the Posidonia International Shipping Exhibition in Greece. If built, it would represent a major step toward decarbonizing ocean freight, which currently relies heavily on fossil fuels.
