Even when comparing forests of similar age, planted forests grow 4.6 percent faster due to active management like selecting fast-growing species and fertilizing. The carbon absorption advantage peaks between 30 and 40 years then drops off sharply after 40 years. The study uses satellite data on leaf area index as a proxy for carbon uptake. Some researchers caution that leaf area is only an approximation and that natural forests may store more carbon in soil and roots early on. The findings give practical guidance for forest based climate projects: when to plant, which species to use, and how long the benefits last. Global climate models often miss these age and management dynamics, so this research helps fill that gap.
