China offers hydrogen expertise to Sarawak for green fuel and carbon reduction goals

China's ambassador to Malaysia said the country is ready to share its hydrogen industry experience with Sarawak, a state in Malaysia with abundant hydropower, solar, and biomass resources. The announcement came at the Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen Conference in Kuching. China's annual hydrogen production now exceeds 39 million tonnes, making it the world's largest producer and consumer, and its electrolyzer equipment is exported to over 30 countries. Areas identified for cooperation include green hydrogen production and trade, green fuel substitution in shipping, cross-border hydrogen logistics corridors, and industrial decarbonization. China also noted its 2025 Energy Law formally includes hydrogen development, and its current five-year plan focuses on scaling up renewable hydrogen equipment and storage technologies. For carbon markets and climate watchers, this signals potential for new green hydrogen supply chains in Southeast Asia. Sarawak's renewable resources combined with China's manufacturing scale could lower costs for green ammonia, methanol, and sustainable aviation fuels. The real test will be project timelines and whether technical standards align across borders.
