China MIIT Recognizes DODGEN Melt Crystallization for 72% Energy Cut in Battery Solvent Purification
manilatimes.netChina's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has selected a DODGEN melt crystallization retrofit as a national low-carbon case. The project replaced conventional distillation for ethylene carbonate purification, a key solvent in lithium-ion battery electrolytes, cutting unit energy consumption by 72% from 120.9 to 33.3 kg of standard coal per tonne. The retrofit on a 90,000-tonne-per-year line saves 7,884 tonnes of coal and avoids about 21,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, with a five-month implementation period. DODGEN's continuous melt crystallization uses multi-stage temperature control to ±0.5°C, improving purification efficiency by roughly 40% compared to distillation. The technology is designed for heat-sensitive materials where distillation risks thermal degradation and high energy use. This supports the localization of high-purity electrolyte materials for China's growing battery supply chain. The recognition from MIIT signals that industrial decarbonization in battery material production is gaining policy support. For companies in the battery supply chain, this shows a proven alternative to energy-intensive distillation that can be deployed quickly and at scale.
