China MIIT Recognizes DODGEN Melt Crystallization for 72% Energy Cut in Battery Solvent Purification

The project, deployed on a 90,000-tonne-per-year line, cut unit energy consumption from 120.9 to 33.3 kg of standard coal per tonne, a 72% reduction. It saves 7,884 tonnes of standard coal and avoids about 21,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The retrofit took five months to install and replaces conventional distillation with continuous melt crystallization. Ethylene carbonate is a key solvent in lithium-ion battery electrolytes. The process uses multi-stage temperature control to within 0.5 degrees Celsius, improving purification efficiency by roughly 40% while avoiding thermal degradation common in distillation. DODGEN says the technology is applicable to other heat-sensitive specialty chemicals. The recognition from MIIT signals China's push to decarbonize its battery materials supply chain without compromising product quality.
