China MIIT Recognizes DODGEN Melt Crystallization for 72% Energy Cut in Battery Solvent Purification

The project, jointly delivered by Shanghai DODGEN Chemical Technology and Shida Shenghua, replaces conventional distillation with continuous melt crystallization. It cuts unit energy consumption by 72%, from 120.9 to 33.3 kg of standard coal per tonne, across a 90,000-tonne-per-year production line. The retrofit avoids about 21,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually and was completed in five months. This technology matters because ethylene carbonate is a core solvent in lithium-ion battery electrolytes. Reducing its production footprint helps decarbonize the battery supply chain without sacrificing product quality. The MIIT recognition signals that China is prioritizing energy-efficient purification methods for specialty chemicals. For carbon market participants, the verified energy savings and emissions reductions offer a concrete example of industrial decarbonization with measurable outcomes.
