China has deployed the Shanghai Lin-gang Underwater Data Center, which uses offshore wind farms for power and seawater for natural cooling. This approach removes the need for energy intensive refrigeration and freshwater cooling systems common in traditional data centers. The facility reports a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating below 1.15 and expects to cut carbon emissions by 12,000 tonnes per year. This project is part of a broader national strategy to align computing infrastructure with renewable energy availability to support AI and cloud growth.
