China launches first zero-carbon sea-river shipping route in Zhejiang with electric container vessel

China's first zero-carbon sea-river intermodal shipping route started operation on June 30 in Zhejiang province. A 10,000-ton-class pure electric container vessel named Ningyuan Dianpeng departed from Jiaxing Port for Ningbo-Zhoushan Port. The vessel is 127.8 meters long, carries 742 TEUs, and uses 10 containerized batteries with about 20,000 kWh of storage. It is expected to save roughly 800 tons of fuel and cut CO2 emissions by over 2,000 tons per year. Each container on the route could reduce emissions by about 60 kilograms, with annual savings around 4,800 tons. The route connects inland waterways to coastal shipping, giving exporters in the Yangtze River Delta a low-carbon option for moving goods. Zhejiang maritime authorities introduced new safety measures for new energy vessels to support the operation. This is a concrete example of electrification in heavy transport, not just a pilot project. The numbers on fuel savings and emissions reductions are specific, which makes the claims easier to evaluate. It will be interesting to see how the charging infrastructure and battery swapping logistics work at scale, and whether the route expands beyond this single vessel.
