China launches first zero-carbon sea-river container corridor with swappable battery electric ship

China has launched its first end-to-end zero-carbon sea-river container corridor, using a 10,000-tonne class all-electric vessel called the Ningyuan Dianpeng. The ship runs on 10 containerized lithium battery modules with 20,000 kWh total capacity and uses both high-voltage shore power fast charging and swappable battery containers. It can carry 742 TEU and cuts about 2,000 tonnes of CO2 per year while eliminating sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions entirely. The route connects Dushan Port in Jiaxing to Jin Tang Terminal at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, creating a closed-loop zero-emission logistics network for inland waterways and coastal shipping. The battery swapping approach means the vessel can refuel during normal cargo handling without extra waiting time. This is a practical test of whether swappable battery systems can work for larger container vessels on regular schedules, not just small ferries.
