China installs first offshore carbon injection platform in Hainan's Dongfang 1-1 gas field
news.cgtn.comChina has completed the underwater jacket for its first offshore carbon injection platform in the Dongfang 1-1 gas field off Hainan Province. The 77-meter steel structure weighs nearly 8,000 tonnes and was slid off a barge and set upright at sea on October 4. Once online, the project is designed to store more than 1 million tonnes of CO2 underground each year. The milestone moves carbon capture and storage work offshore, where monitoring and containment are harder than on land. The platform is tied to a gas field, so the CO2 likely comes from gas processing, which gives the project a clear source boundary. The next test is whether injection rates and storage permanence match the design figures.
