China Expands High-End Carbon Fiber Production With Three New Lines to Strengthen Strategic Supply

China has started operating three new high-performance carbon fiber production lines at the Lianyungang base of Zhongfu Shenying Carbon Fiber, a subsidiary of China National Building Material Group. The lines cover general-purpose, high-strength, and high-modulus carbon fiber, adding 6,600 tons of annual capacity. The expansion targets gaps in domestic supply for industries like new energy, aerospace, and deep-sea engineering. The move is part of a broader push to reduce reliance on imports for advanced materials critical to clean energy and high-tech manufacturing. Carbon fiber's light weight and strength make it essential for wind turbine blades, hydrogen storage tanks, and electric vehicle components. By broadening both volume and product range, China aims to secure supply chains for strategic sectors. Chairman Zhou Yuxian said the new lines address a structural shortage of high-end carbon fiber and incomplete product coverage. The project was developed independently, signaling technical self-sufficiency. For global carbon markets and clean energy investors, this could mean lower costs and more reliable supply for components that directly impact project economics and emissions reduction timelines.
