A new study on China's electric vehicle transition reveals that carbon emission reductions from EVs are not evenly distributed across cities. Researchers found that cities with cleaner electricity grids and better charging infrastructure achieve far greater CO2 cuts, while coal-dependent cities see much smaller benefits because recharging EVs still relies on fossil fuels. The study maps city-level emission reductions using vehicle registration data, energy consumption patterns, and grid composition. Wealthier cities with higher EV adoption rates and better public charging networks outperform economically disadvantaged areas. This suggests that blanket EV policies miss local realities and that regionally tailored strategies are needed to maximize decarbonization. Key factors driving the disparity include local energy mix, urban density, and infrastructure investment. High-density cities like Shanghai benefit from shorter trips and cleaner grids, while sprawling mid-sized cities struggle with long commutes and coal-heavy power. The findings underscore that electrification alone is not a universal solution without parallel grid decarbonization and equitable infrastructure spending.
