A new study using satellite data finds that China's expansion of electric vehicles reduced PM2.5 concentrations by about 23% and carbon monoxide by 30%, potentially preventing up to 262,000 premature deaths from air pollution. The health benefits were strongest in urban areas with higher EV adoption and better charging infrastructure, while rural and smaller cities saw smaller gains. The research highlights that EVs shift emissions to power plants: China still gets about 55% of electricity from coal. Experts say decarbonizing the grid alongside EV adoption is needed to maximize health and climate benefits. The study provides concrete evidence linking EV policy to public health outcomes, beyond just carbon reduction.
