Researchers in China are developing a method to generate electricity from coal without burning it. By using electrochemical fuel cells, the system converts the chemical energy of carbon directly into power, bypassing the traditional combustion process and steam turbines. This approach aims to eliminate the high emissions associated with coal plants and reduce heat loss. The engineers suggest that these facilities could eventually be installed directly inside coal mines to remove the need for surface transport.
