Researchers in China have developed a Zero-Carbon Direct Coal Fuel Cell (ZC-DCFC) that converts coal into electricity through electrochemical oxidation. Unlike traditional thermal plants, this process captures carbon internally as a carbonate byproduct, preventing emissions from entering the atmosphere. The technology claims a theoretical energy efficiency of 80 percent, double that of conventional coal plants. While the innovation could help China meet its 2060 carbon neutrality goals, experts suggest commercial viability may not arrive until 2045 due to the remaining lifespan of existing coal infrastructure.
