China completes main structure for first offshore CO2 injection platform at Dongfang 1-1 gas field
bastillepost.comChina has finished building the main structure for the central platform at the Dongfang 1-1 gas field, the country's first offshore project designed to inject carbon dioxide into the seabed. The platform is now in commissioning. Once fully operational, the project is expected to store more than one million tonnes of CO2 per year in gas-bearing reservoirs. The approach is tied to enhanced gas recovery. CO2 that comes up with natural gas is captured, compressed, and pumped back into the reservoir, which helps push out hard-to-recover gas while keeping the CO2 underground. That avoids the usual step of sending high-CO2 gas to onshore processing plants, cutting transport costs and emissions along the way. Dongfang 1-1 has been producing gas since 2003 and has delivered more than 50 billion cubic meters to date.
