China has finished the main structure of its first offshore CO2 injection platform at the Dongfang 1-1 gas field. The central platform, weighing nearly 17,000 tonnes, is now in the commissioning stage. It will capture CO2 produced alongside natural gas, compress it, and inject it back into underground formations, a process that can boost recovery of hard-to-extract gas while permanently storing the CO2. The project is designed to store more than 1 million tonnes of CO2 per year once fully operational. The Dongfang field, producing since 2003, has seen natural gas output decline and CO2 content rise as it ages, which made it a suitable candidate for this technology. This marks the first large-scale offshore application of carbon injection in China and could inform future CCS projects in the country's offshore energy sector.
