China climate report: carbon intensity down 17.7%, renewables reach 60.7% of capacity
english.news.cnChina's annual climate action report, released by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, shows carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP fell 17.7% in 2025 compared with 2020. Non-fossil energy reached 21.7% of total consumption, and combined wind and solar capacity hit 1.84 billion kilowatts. By the first half of 2026, renewables accounted for 60.7% of national power capacity, with solar installed capacity passing coal for the first time. The report also notes that China's carbon market now covers about 8.3 billion tonnes of CO2, more than 65% of national emissions, and cumulative allowance trading volume has surpassed 1 billion tonnes. New energy vehicle sales have led globally for 11 consecutive years. The numbers show a power system and manufacturing base that has shifted sharply toward clean energy. The open questions are utilization rates, curtailment, transmission buildout, and whether the carbon price is strong enough to drive real abatement outside the power sector.
